Duck Ride

Author's Note: This was the most disastrous experience that could have ever happened to me. Ever since then I have been slightly more afraid of storms and ducks at the same time.

I was at Wisconsin Dells when my sister Liz wanted to go on a duck ride so I went with her and when we got there it seemed like there was going to be a little rain storm but it didn’t look like much. While we were getting on the duck I noticed how cute the driver was even though all the duck drivers are. As we took our seat I saw that behind us there was a little girl who was asleep. I felt bad since this was an awesome experience. As though I thought.

Once we got to the part where we got into the water I noticed that the clouds where turning a very dark grey color and a few minutes later I looked at the water and it seemed little waves where forming from some very strong wind. The duck started to rock back and forth and that’s when the real storm was starting to come in. It didn’t take too long for it to start raining and lightning striking all around us. One strike of lightning was only about 10 yards away and almost made me jump out of my seat. Finally the driver informed us to pull down the plastic side sheet to keep from getting any more soaked but we unluckily had to hold onto the bottom so it would flop all around, sadly for the driver he was out from under the roof of the duck and was getting soaked. I felt really bad for him since he was most likely freezing in only his jacket. I thought the driver was wanting to get out of here as much as anyone else as he got us out of the water as quick as possible.

After all that was happening in just a few minutes I heard the people behind us laughing and was driving me insane until I took a quick peek and saw that the little girl was sleeping and realized that she wasn’t even aware that she was getting soaked upon and not hearing everybody screaming, that really amazed me. Finally I got back to reality and remembered the situation we were in and saw that we got to the part where we where deep in the woods and I saw trees leaning almost falling on top of us and leaves flying all over. I had no idea how the driver could tell where he was going since we could only see a foot away from us with leaves and rain all over. By this point I was soaked freezing and terrified all at once thinking we were going to die by a huge old broken branch or tree crashing us. I looked into my sisters face that was covered with horror all over and holding onto my arm looking like she was about to ball out crying and loose it. I got a little proud of myself since I was being the brave one here, probably the only brave one since I was the only person strong enough to hold the sheet down for everyone on my side and I was hoping for a “thank you” after all of this, that is if we make it out alive. Next thing I knew I saw something somehow fly into the duck and scrape my leg. I can’t remember why but I was worried that it was something that was going to kill me like a poison branch or something even though I didn’t get a good look at it. Then I looked down around my feet to find what it was and it was just a little acorn, a little acorn! I was amazed because that little thing made a pretty deep cut by me knee. I don’t remember why but I decided to keep it for the memory of this totally awesome adventure.

I was relieved when we finally got back and we everyone was still alive, terrified but still alive. I looked in my jacket pocket excited to find that the acorn was still there and hadn’t fell out of my pocket. When we got off I saw that little girl was still sleeping after everything that just happened. My sister seemed to be in heaven when we got in the store but she refused that she would let us both be soaking wet when we get in the car, she wanted to buy all new cloths in the store but she had no more money left and that’s when she made us both just sit in the store and wait to get a little dry. We were in there for about 15 minutes and the only thing that kept me from being extremely bored was that there was two teenagers walking next to the highway getting soaked in their swimsuits by getting splashed by a big wave of water when a car came by very fast. I have to say that was hilarious because they here not happy at all. Finally my sister came to her senses that we were not going to get dry anytime soon and we just left.

Believe it or not but I still have that acorn that scrapped my leg. My sister and I will never forget that trip. My fear of ducks are now long gone but now I always check the weather before we decide to go on a duck.
